Is Movember synonymous with moustaches or men's health? An examination of internet search activity for prostate and testicular cancer during the campaign
ConclusionWe concluded that the Movember campaign is consistently linked in the public consciousness with novelty facial hair and only weakly associated with an awareness of prostate and testicular cancers. Whilst the funding generated by the campaign should be commended, more could be done to link the campaign and moustaches to awareness of common male cancers.

Hypothesis driven single nucleotide polymorphism search (HyDn-SNP-S).
Abstract The advent of complete-genome genotyping across phenotype cohorts has provided a rich source of information for bioinformaticians. However the search for SNPs from this data is generally performed on a study-by-study case without any specific hypothesis of the location for SNPs that are predictive for the phenotype. We have designed a method whereby very large SNP lists (several gigabytes in size), combining several genotyping studies at once, can be sorted and traced back to their ultimate consequence in protein structure. Given a working hypothesis, researchers are able to easily search whole genome gen...

Primary research only search in Trip
I thought I would share this tip.Via twitter I was asked by @AliceMBuchan if it was possible to restrict the results to all the primary research articles.  Currently, we have four separate primary research 'sections':Key primary research (e.g. NEJM, Lancet, Evidence Updates)Controlled trialsExtended primary research - around 300 'high impact' journalsCase reports - taken from the Cases DatabaseFor secondary research we have a filter that allows a user to select 'All Secondary Evidence' but nothing similar for primary research.  While I'm not sure there is demand for an 'All Primary Research' button I've been able...

Gene expression feature selection for prostate cancer diagnosis using a two-phase heuristic–deterministic search strategy
Here, a two-phase search strategy is proposed to identify the biomarkers in gene expression data set for the prostate cancer diagnosis. A statistical filtering method is initially employed to remove the noisiest data. In the first phase of the search strategy, a multi-objective optimisation based on the binary particle swarm optimisation algorithm tuned by a chaotic method is proposed to select the optimal subset of genes with the minimum number of genes and the maximum classification accuracy. Finally, in the second phase of the search strategy, the cache-based modification of the sequential forward floating selection alg...

In Search for risk predictors at the microscopic scenario of a negative biopsy. A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The MS of a negative PB may include atypical small acinar proliferation, HGPIN, prostatic atrophy, inflammatory proliferative atrophy and prostatic inflammation lesions, since they all seem to be associated with the risk of PC detection in repeat PB. This review has led us to create the hypothesis that the MS of a negative PB might be a valuable and useful tool when considering repeat PB. PMID: 31109736 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Internet use after prostate cancer : Search for information and trust in disease-related information in long-term survivors.
CONCLUSIONS: Two-thirds of long-term PCa survivors are using the internet. A significant proportion expressed difficulties finding proper and reliable information. Urologists should be familiar with online resources on PCa in order to offer advice to patients and to recommend adequate information on the internet. Prostate cell lines as models for biomarker discovery: Performance of current markers and the search for new biomarkers
CONCLUSIONSWhile the existing prostate cancer biomarkers and lysosomal proteins investigated here were not able to specifically differentiate between a panel of nonmalignant and prostate cancer cell lines, endosomal proteins showed some discriminatory capacity. LIMP‐2 is a critical regulator of endosome biogenesis and the increased expression observed in prostate cancer cells indicated that other endosome related proteins may also be upregulated and could be investigated as novel biomarkers. First postoperative PSA is associated with outcomes in patients with node positive prostate cancer: Results from the SEARCH database.
CONCLUSIONS: pN1 patients with a first postoperative PSA ≥0.2ng/ml were more likely to develop metastases. First postoperative PSA may be useful in identifying pN1 patients who harbor distant disease and aid in secondary treatment decisions. PMID: 29429895 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Radical Prostatectomy and the Effect of Close Surgical Margins: Results from the SEARCH database
ConclusionsManagement of men with close surgical margins is a diagnostic challenge, with a disease course that is not entirely benign. Evaluation of other known risk factors likely provide greater prognostic value for these men and may ultimately better select those who may benefit from adjuvant therapy. This article is protected by copyright. Molecules, Vol. 23, Pages 567: Identification and Characterizations of Novel, Selective Histone Methyltransferase SET7 Inhibitors by Scaffold Hopping- and 2D-Molecular Fingerprint-Based Similarity Search
heng Luo Kai Chen SET7, serving as the only histone methyltransferase that monomethylates ‘Lys-4’ of histone H3, has been proved to function as a key regulator in diverse biological processes, such as cell proliferation, transcriptional network regulation in embryonic stem cell, cell cycle control, protein stability, heart morphogenesis and development. What′s more, SET7 is involved inthe pathogenesis of alopecia aerate, breast cancer, tumor and cancer progression, atherosclerosis in human carotid plaques, chronic renal diseases, diabetes, obesity, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and ...

Socioeconomic status, race, and long-term outcomes after radical prostatectomy in an equal access health system: Results from the SEARCH database.
CONCLUSIONS: In an equal-access setting, lower SES associated with decreased CRPC, metastases, and PCSM in black but not white men. If confirmed, these findings suggest a complex relationship between race, SES, and PC with further research needed to understand why low SES in black men decreased the risk for poor PC outcomes after RP. Profiling of Androgen-Dependent Enhancer RNAs Expression in Human Prostate Tumors: Search for Malignancy Transition Markers
CONCLUSION: Presented data suggest that prostate tumor development may associate with epigenetic reorganization in the KLK3 genomic regulatory elements reflected by changes of the KLK3eRNA expression. Our findings support a potential of eRNAs profiling to be used as diagnostic marker.PMID:34549035 | PMC:PMC8449685 | DOI:10.2147/RRU.S328661

Diabetes predicts metastasis after radical prostatectomy in obese men: results from the SEARCH database
Conclusions Diabetes was not associated with metastasis risk overall. Stratification by obesity yielded significant differences, with diabetes linked to a fourfold higher metastasis risk in obese men, despite predicting more aggressive secondary treatment. Longer diabetes duration was also associated with increased metastasis risk.

Pre-analytical-related variability influencing serum peptide profiles demonstrated in a mass spectrometry-based search for colorectal and prostate cancer biomarkers.
Abstract Although the degradome, which comprises proteolytic fragments of blood proteins, presents a potential source of diagnostic biomarkers, studies on cancer peptide biomarkers have provided inconsistent conclusions. In the present study, we reevaluated the usefulness of serum degradome analyses for searching peptide cancer biomarker candidates. Particular attention was paid to pre-analytical factors influencing the variability of determined peptide levels, including clotting time and control group selection. Studies were conducted on 44 and 86 serum samples collected from cancer patients and healthy individua...
